Hausdorff Center for Mathematics

Bonn is an internationally renowned center for mathematical research and teaching. The Hausdorff Center for Mathematics (HCM), established in 2006 as the first German Cluster of Excellence in Mathematics, is a major center for mathematical research and international scientific exchange. Its spectrum ranges from pure and applied mathematics to interdisciplinary research, including theoretical economics. HCM features the Hausdorff Research Institute (HIM) with its trimester programs, the Hausdorff School for Mathematics (HSM) which is our central institution for all early career researchers - postdocs and PhD students - and comprises our graduate school (BIGS Mathematics).

The Department of Mathematics coordinates teaching and research in Mathematics within the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Bonn. The Max Planck Institute for Mathematics is a research institute for pure mathematics and belongs to the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (MPG). With its well known guest program the institute aims at stimulating the exchange of ideas within the international mathematics community.

Leopoldina elects Daniel Huybrechts as a member¹⁰

A few weeks ago, the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina elected Daniel Huybrechts as a member of the Leopoldina on the recommendation of renowned colleagues from among its members.

Leibniz Prize awarded to Angkana Rüland¹¹

Last December, the German Research Foundation (DFG) announced that Angkana Rüland from the Cluster of Excellence Hausdorff Center for Mathematics (HCM) would receive a Leibniz Prize endowed with 2.5 million euros. She has now been officially presented with the award at Cafe Moskau in Berlin.

Jerald L. Ericksen Prize for Sergio Conti, Stefan Müller and Michael Ortiz¹²

Sergio Conti and Stefan Müller from the Institute for Applied Mathematics at the University of Bonn and the former Bonn Research Chair Michael Ortiz (Caltech) have been awarded the Jerald L. Ericksen Prize 2025 for their work on “Data Driven Problems in Elasticity”. The prize will be awarded at the end of July at the joint SIAM/CAIMS conference AN25 in Montral.

Abel in Bonn - Abel Symposium 2025¹³

The Niels Henrik Abel Memorial Fund has established an annual Abel Symposium, which is administrated by the Norwegian Mathematical Society. The symposium follows the final meeting of the Abel Prize Comittee. This year, the Abel Symposium takes place on Thursday, January 23th, 2025, at the Hausdorff Center for Mathematics (HCM) in Bonn, Germany, hosting world-leading speakers in various fields of mathematics.
