Global Mobility Fellowships
Our Global Mobility Fellowships offer fully-funded and fully-organized visits to the Trimester Programs of the Hausdorff Research Institute for Mathematics and participation spots for the Special Topic Schools of the Hausdorff School for Mathematics for selected researchers and PhD students from countries of the Global South. With this program we aim to reduce economic and practical barriers to participation in some of the core initiatives of HCM and to welcome researchers from around the world to our programs and events!

Application
You can apply for a Global Mobility Fellowship alongside applying for participation in a Trimester Program of the HIM or a Special Topic School of the HSM. Please, fill out the application for the program or event of your choice first and indicate on the application form that you will be applying for an accompanying Global Mobility Fellowship. Then fill out the separate application for the Global Mobility Fellowship below. You will be asked to upload a CV and a letter of motivation as PDF files. The goal of the Global Mobility Fellowships is to enable all qualified and motivated interested researchers - from PhD students to full professors - from economically disadvantaged institutions to participate in our signature programs and events.
While we often expect participants to cover different parts of the costs of their visits to HCM by their own institutional funds, we understand that this might prove prohibitive to some researchers who would be a great addition to our programs. We also understand that organizing a trip to a research institution in Germany might come with its own set of hurdles and challenges. So, we have designed this initiative to support you and to assist you throughout the process!
Researchers whose home institution is based in the Global South are eligible to apply. A full list of the relevant countries is here.
Global Mobility Fellowships FAQs
Global Mobility Fellows are selected among suitable candidates alongside their selection as a HIM Trimester Program participant or a HSM Special Topic School participant. The fellowships are only awarded to those candidates who have been successfully selected and invited to participate in a Trimester Program or Special Topic Scchool.
They are reserved for candidates whose home institution is based in the Global South (according to the United Nations definition), that is in a country that is developing and/or low-income. But because economic circumstances of institutions vary greatly within the Global South, we ask candidates to submit a statement explaining their need for additional financial assistance to participate in our programs. You can find a full list of eligible countries here.
First, you should apply for participation in the HIM Trimester Program, or the HSM Special Topic School you are interested in, and indicate on your application form that you will also be applying for a Global Mobility Fellowship. Then you fill out the additional application form for the Global Mobility Fellowship on this webpage. This will require you to upload a CV and a letter of motivation addressing your specific circumstances. The deadline for applications for a Global Mobility Fellowship are the same ones as the deadlines for application for the program or even of your interest. You will be informed about the results as soon as they are available.
Global Mobility Fellows are selected in a joint process between the scientific organizers of our Trimester Programs and Special Topic Schools, the Program Coordinators and HCM's Diversity and Equity Coordinator. The selection is based on academic qualifications for the program or event of choice and demonstrated motivation and need for additional financial support.
No, at the moment the program is designed to support suitable participants of these two types of events.
