Information for student assistants

The majority of mathematics tutorial sessions at the University of Bonn are run by students. Students also provide support in research and administration. Are you interested in taking on a position as a student assistant, e.g., as a tutor? Would you like to take part in the practical teaching course? Are you already working as a student assistant and would like to take part in a training? You can find all the relevant information here.

Mathematics-specific training

A full-day mathematics-specific training is offered for new mathematics tutors once a year in October. Participation in the training is expected for new tutors. In the training you will deal with topics such as presentation of solutions, correction of exercise sheets and diversity and you will reflect on your role as a tutor. The next training is expected to take place in October 2025. Note that the training is currently only offered in German.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Tutors can take on different tasks depending on the specific lecture course. These include:

  • Conducting a tutorial group: Preparing and conducting tutorial sessions or helpdesk sessions, grading student assignments, grading exams and student projects, creating solutions to problems
  • Assistance with final exams: Support with exam supervision and correction on both exam dates
  • Attendance at the tutor meeting: This usually takes place once a week and the exercise sheet is discussed in advance.
  • Time documentation: Recording work hours in accordance with minimum wage regulations (Mindestlohngesetz).

There are generally no tutorials on public holidays or on Dies Academicus.

Tutors usually receive employment contracts as student assistants (SHK) or, for students with a bachelor's degree, as academic assistants (WHF), working 7 hours per week for either 6 or 12 months. As of October 1, 2024, the hourly wage for an SHK is €13.98 gross, and for a WHF, it is €15.15. When calculating your gross monthly salary, you should consider that a month consists of 4.348 weeks. Therefore, the monthly salary amounts to €425.50 for SHKs and €461.11 for WHFs.

For other assistant roles, the same hourly wages apply, but the number of hours may vary.

You can be absent from work for up to three calendar days without a doctor's note. From the fourth calendar day of incapacity, a doctor's certificate is mandatory. If you fall ill from Friday through Monday, the two weekend days are included, so you would need to submit a doctor's note by Monday.

  • Tutors at the Institute for Applied Mathematics: Please contact the lecturer of your course and Mr. Schubert at geschaeftsstelle@iam.uni-bonn.de.
  • Other roles: Please contact your supervisor.

Tutorials do not need to be rescheduled in case of illness. Substitute arrangements should be discussed with the lecturer of your module

  • Campus Security of the University of Bonn: You can reach the university's security service by phone at 0228-73-7444.

In case of an immediate threat, please contact the police directly: 110.

In the event of conflicts, harassment, or discrimination, you can always reach out to the ombudspersons of the Mathematics Department. For more information, please visit this link.

The income limit for mini-jobs is currently set at €538 per month. To remain below the mini-job threshold, you can work up to 8.5 hours per week as a student assistant (SHK) and up to 8 hours per week as an academic assistant with a bachelor's degree (WHF).
